Abstract

642,600. Thermionic valves. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. July 25, 1947, No. 20133. Convention date, March 31, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] A positive space-charge electrode 22, 23, Fig. 3, between negative control grid 24 and cathode 27 is adjusted to provide a negative capacitance between these electrodes. A theoretical discussion shows that to do this the electrons must leave the space-charge electrode with a finite velocity and in a retarding field. The spacing of the space-charge electrode from the control grid must be at least 1.5 times its spacing from the cathode; as shown, it is three times. Characteristic curves are given, which exhibit also negative resistance and transconductance under certain conditions. The electrodes are aligned cylindrical grids supported within a cylindrical anode 17 by mica spacers, the anode being supported by a stem clamp. As shown, the space-charge electrode is two grids 22, 23, connected together. A screen-grid 40, Fig. 11, may be provided between the anode and control grid.
