Abstract

982,406. Ionization manometers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 12, 1961 [July 15, 1960], No. 25237/61. Heading H1D. An ionization manometer comprises an ioncollector wire 11 stretched within a helical wire anode 7 on the outer side of which a filament cathode 5 is arranged, the diameter of the collector wire 11 being less than 10 microns. The circuit provides in operation an anodecathode voltage of not more than one fifth the anode-collector voltage. The anode and collector voltages are preferably chosen so that the collector current tends to become independent of the anode-collector voltage, which is preferably less than 500V, the collector being earthed, and the anode-cathode voltage being stabilized. As shown, the V-shaped filament 5 is stretched between three leads 4 and the end turns of the helical wire anode are progressively reduced to counteract the escape of ions. The tungsten wire collector has a diameter of 4Á and is stretched by a spring 10, glass tubes 16 shielding the connections to leads 9. The envelope has a conductive tin-oxide coating 15 which may be directly connected to the cathode. Electrode dimensions are given. Anode and collector voltages of + 55V and - 250V respectively result in low X-ray emission and enable pressures down to about 10<SP>-13</SP> mm. to be measured.
