Abstract
465,762. Arc - - discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 6, 1936, No. 12802. Convention date, May 11, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] To maintain constant the ignition point in each cycle of the alternating potential applied to an arc-discharge tube, the starting electrode, which projects into the cathode pool, is so formed that a change in resistance of the starting-current circuit due to variations in the level of the pool is compensated for by a change in the diameter of the line of contact with the surface of the pool. The starting electrode 10, which may have the shape shown in Fig. 2, and may consist of tungsten or silica carbide mixed with clay, is held in a member 16 swaged to the conductor 11. A lateral stem 3 supports the conductor 11 which is partly screened by a glass tube 12. The tube is adapted to supply rectified current to a load 19 such as a spot-welding device and the starting circuit includes a resistance 22 and a thermionic or oxide rectifier 23. The anode 7 consists of graphite or molybdenum and the conductor 5 is secured to the device through a glass to metal seal 6. A mercury or gallium cathode may be used.
