Abstract
854,752. Discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 7, 1958 [Aug. 10, 1957], No. 25356/58. Class 39(1). In a high pressure discharge tube of the kind described in Specification 854,751 having an electrode provided with a conical cavity, the apex of which merges into a cylindrical bore, this bore opens into a space having a greater crosssectional area than the bore and containing a material having a higher electron emission than the electrode body and a member in contact with both the emissive material and the wall of the cylindrical bore to promote the migration of the emissive material to the bore. As shown this member is a tungsten wire helix 37. Two layers of helically coiled tungsten wire 34 connect the current supply lead 33 to the tungsten electrode 30. The emissive material 38 may be a mixture of barium oxide and thorium oxide. A tube comprising a quartz envelope and two similar electrodes is described and suitable dimensions are given. The tube may be filled with xenon at a pressure of about ten atmospheres.
