Abstract

532,479. R÷ntgen-ray tubes ; electric supply systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 31, 1939, No. 25011. Convention date, Sept. 1, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] In a R÷ntgen-ray tube the discharge takes place in an ionizable medium and through a constriction to enable suitable high potentials to be established in the medium. A mercury pool cathode 12 may be used with keep-alive and starter electrodes 14, 16 ; a cooling coil 13 limits the pressure of the mercury vapour which may be between a fraction of a micron to several microns. A cathode spot anchoring ring 21 of molybdenum surrounds the electrode 16. A thermionic cathode with a neon filling may be used. The constriction is formed by orifices one in each of a number of plates (Fig. 4, not shown) extending across the tube or by an orifice 40 in a thin plate supported by a heavier one 35 sealed to the tube ; a water cooling coil 41 surrounds the plate 35. Shields 52, 53 and 54 surround the anode 29 which carries the tungsten target 30. A cooling system 25, 26 is provided for the anode. The tube is supplied from a source 42 through a resistance 43 and inductance 44 with a condenser 45 and potential limiting spark gap 47 in parallel across the tube. A local circuit 18, 19, 22 is used for the keep-alive electrode 14.
