Abstract

455,548. Metal - vapour rectifiers. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. March 5, 1936, No. 6726. Convention date, March 8, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] A rectifier comprises an iron container which is adapted to be air-cooled and is formed mainly by a truncated cone 2 and a shallow curved dish 3 at the edge of which are located the anode arms 5 each of which has a straight longitudinal axis, contains the anode in that portion which is located externally of the container, and is arranged at so small an angle to the axis of the container that straight paths between the anode and cathode are avoided. The cover 4 may be soldered or welded to the container which is sealed off from the pump. An iron container 8 for the cathode is lined with insulating material and a connection to the cathode is effected through a conductor 10 surrounded by an insulating tube 11. Ignition and exciting electrodes 12, 13 formed, e.g. of carbide are provided. The anode arms are welded into the container and may be provided with lips 7 which collect the condensate and return it to the bottom of the container. The anodes are supported on caps 19 which are formed of glass, porcelain or of ceramic material and are fused or soldered to the arms through sheet-metal cylinders 18 which consist of a metal, such as chromenickel, chrome-iron, molybdenum, iron molybdenum or an iron and cobalt alloy, the coefficient of expansion of which is the same as that of the material of the caps. A further cap 20 supports a screen 21 of similar material. An annular cooler 14 is supported from the cover and the supports 16, 17 of the container are in the form of cooling fins. In another form, a preliminary vacuum space 28, Fig. 2, is provided and the container is fitted with an additional cooler 24. Deionizing and control grids 30, 31 are provided. The rectifier may be housed within a cabinet which is fitted with a fan and apparatus for circulating cooling fluid.
