Abstract
463,395. Mercury - arc rectifiers. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Dec. 24, 1936, No. 35370. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] In a mercury-vapour rectifier having a discharge vessel in part I of metal and in part 2 of glass, the mercury cathode 3 being con. tained in the metal part, two rings 20, 21 of differing heights are placed in the cathode near the metal wall to prevent the arc discharge creeping along the wall. The spacing of the rings or the space between the rings and the wall does not exceed half the height to which the rings extend from the mercury. The cathode centring spot 23 is carried with the rings by insulating tubes 24 from the main anode shield 14. The rings may be made of molybdenum. The cooling jacket 16 is held on to the metal part by a stud 19 which acts as the lead-in to the cathode. A starting anode 4 is worked by the electromagnet 13.
