Abstract

428,653. Discharge rectifiers. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET, Vasteras, Sweden. June 28, 1934, No. 19109. Convention date, July 22, 1933. [Class 39 (i)] To prevent contraction of the discharge in gas or vapour filled valves, a return conductor for the current passes concentrically through the discharge path, the field due to this current tending to repel the vapour or gas. In one form the return lead 2 from the anode 1 passes through the mercury cathode 3. Sleeves 8, 12 surround the anode, the former supporting a grid 9 ; the lead 2 is enclosed in a quartz tube 7. An insulating screen 13 carrying a metal screen 14 limits the cathode and arc. The grid may be biassed through a lead 10. In a modification the lead to the cathode passes through the anode which is surrounded by a shield limiting the arc ; exciting and ignition anodes are provided. When the anode is arranged as shown in Fig. 1 the lead 2 may be cooled by circulating liquid contained in a receptacle 36, Fig. 3, through two pipes 34, 35, vapour from the top of the cooling chamber 33 passing to the receptacle to be condensed.
