Abstract
To improve thermal radiation and reduce secondary emission one or more of the components of an electric discharge tube, e.g. the electrodes, electrode supports or wall of the envelope, have a dull black surface consisting of particles of a metal, the melting point of which is higher than 1200 DEG K., the dimensions of the component particles being of the order of 0,1 micron or less, preferably 0,01 micron. Metals such as tungsten or molybdenum, melting above 2000 DEG K., are preferably employed. Nickel and iron may be deposited by decomposition of their oxalates, and platinum by electrolysis. Tungsten and molybdenum may be vaporized in a gaseous atmosphere, such as argon, or in water vapour at 1 mm. pressure or more, preferably 20 mms. The oxides, halides or oxyhalides of tungsten or molybdenum may be reduced by hydrogen at low temperature. Cathodic disintegration may be employed.
