Abstract

383,156. Discharge devices; obtaining high vacua. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Germer, E.; 31, Mariannenstrasse, Berlin.) March 30, 1932, No. 9152. [Class 39 (i).] During the exhaustion of a discharge tube by means of a pump, a discharge is set up in a metallic vapour which is generated from a body not constituting an electrode and is condensed and led back into the tube. Exhaustion is effected through a relatively narrow tube 3. The vapour is generated from mercury 2 and is condensed in a cooler 8 and in chambers 5, 6. A gas may be introduced to facilitate starting, and finally a little mercury may be left in the tube or it may be completely distilled off.
