Arc lamps.-A gas-filled lamp with refractory electrodes for alternating current is so regulated by means of a suitably proportioned series resistance, choking coil or condenser that each electrode during the time it is working as an anode reaches such a high temperature that during the following period its temperature does not fall below the "disintegration'temperature." With tungsten electrodes the temperature should remain between the limit 2800‹ and 3000‹ absolute during working. A lamp for use on a circuit of 50 periods has small spherical tungsten electrodes 1 mm. apart, and a filling of neon or argon at a pressure of 50 cms. of mercury.
