Abstract
854,513. Metal-vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 6, 1959 [Jan. 6, 1958], No. 484/58. Class 39(1). A relatively cool region in which mercury vapour can condense whilst the lamp is in operation is provided by means of tubular stem 10 the closed end of which protrudes beyond the closed end of discharge lamp envelope 1, the other end of the stem communicating with the discharge space via aperture 11 in foot-tube 5. A cap 8 is attached to the envelope so as to enclose the protruding stem portion and in the space thus formed a conical 12 or disc-like reflecting member may be provided to reflect heat away from the stem tip. In another form a metallic coating may be provided on the re-entrant envelope portion. In operation the stem tip temperature preferably lies in the range 25-43‹C. and the lamp which has a fluorescent layer 2, contains a neon, or a neon and argon mixture at 2À3 mm of Hg. Heat transfer to the stem tip may also be restricted by providing the envelope with an inwardly extending circumferential groove in the region behind the electrode. The cap may be perforated. The lamp may have stem tubes at each end, one of which may be connected to pumping means. Specifications 835,144, 854,388 and 854,514 are referred to.
