Abstract

1,192,184. Discharge lamps; cathode materials. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 7 Aug., 1967 [10 Aug., 1966], No. 36073/67. Heading H1D. A spectral radiation source includes a common anode and first and second hollow cathodes which include first and second materials, respectively, for providing beams of radiation characteristic of the two materials, the two cathodes being so disposed with respect to the anode that the two beams are projected along substantially the same path. As shown, the lamp includes a plate anode 26 and two cathodes, the first-22-being hollow, and the second-28-of annular form, coaxially mounted in series to direct a beam of radiation through the end window 14. The discharge is limited to the desired portions of the cathodes by ceramic or mica screens 32, 34, 44, 46, 48 and 50, and the electrodes are supported by conductive rods 18, 19 and 20 which act as leads and are provided with insulating sleeves and rings. The two cathodes are supplied from a single power source through separate, adjustable impedances (Fig. 1, not shown), whereby the relative intensities of the spectra provided by the two cathodes may be adjusted. One cathode may be of a Ca/Ba/Sr alloy and the other of a Fe/Cu/Ni/Mn alloy, and the anode may be of Ta and act as getter when suitably connected. The lamp may be provided with more than two cathodes, arranged coaxially and in series. The lamp is filled with argon or neon at 0À5 to 40 torr.
