Abstract
1,214,179. Discharge lamps; electrode materials. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 Aug., 1968 [25 Aug., 1967], No. 40216/68. Heading H1D. The intensity of resonance radiation in a low-pressure gas discharge lamp is increased and the band-width reduced by a collar 6 surrounding the path of a positive-column discharge between electrodes 3 or 4 and located between an atom source 5 containing an element of which the resonance radiation is desired and a window 2. The gas filling is one or more of Ne, A, Kr, Xe, He, at a pressure of not more than 5 mm. Hg. e.g. A at a pressure of 3 mm. Hg. The collar 6 may be of glass or ceramic. The atom source 5 is preferably a sputtering electrode made from a plate, wire gauze or bars formed into a cylinder. Alternatively, the sputtering electrode may be designed in the manner known for storage cathodes, or may be a coil heated by an electric current. Suitable materials are Cu or sintered Ni, W or Mo containing the desired elements or compounds thereof. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the cathode 3 and anode 4 are located on the axis of the lamp, the anode being in the form of an apertured disc. A further alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) contains two atom sources, one for Ca and the other for Mg.
