Abstract

1,131,566. Metal-vapour lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 Sept., 1966 [21 Sept., 1965], No. 41423/66. Heading H1D. A low-pressure mercury vapour lamp having thermally-emissive electrodes 5 contains an amount 13 of metal which can form an amalgam with mercury located in a region of the lamp, the temperature of which during operation of the lamp is not directly influenced by the temperature of the electrodes, and also contains a further amount of metal 11 which can form an amalgam with mercury located adjacent an electrode on a member 7 the temperature of which is directly influenced by the temperature of the electrode after switching on the lamp. The metal 11 may be such that it forms an amalgam which, at the same temperature, has a lower vapour pressure than the metal 13, e.g. the metals may be respectively indium and cadmium. Other metals which may be used are thorium, gallium and zinc. When the lamp is switched on, the amalgam 11 on member 7 reaches a high temperature quickly and the mercury from it is evaporated completely. Thereafter, the required mercury-vapour pressure of from 4 to 10 microns is determined by the amalgam 13 as it becomes heated by the discharge. The supporting members 7 consist of metal rings electrically insulated from the electrodes. The lamp is provided with a luminescent layer 2.
