Abstract
1,035,593. Fluorescent discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 3, 1965 [March 6, 1964], No. 9077/65. Heading H1D. A starting strip 6, Fig. 1 (not shown), from 1 to 10 mm. wide, provided under the luminescent layer 5 of a low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp and not connected to either of the electrodes 3 and 4 has a part, between at least one of the electrodes and a point at a distance from this electrode which is smaller than onefifth of the distance between the electrodes, in electrically conducting contact with the discharge plasma. The contact may be effected by a bare portion 7 of the strip 6 or by providing on the luminescent layer a small contact strip 11, Fig. 2 (not shown), which is preferably of the same material as the strip 6. A suitable material is a mixture of graphite powder, butylacetate, monoethylglycolether, nitrocellulose and powdered glass in specified proportions. The starting strip may be transparent or opaque. if opaque, it is preferably less than 4 mm. wide.
