Abstract

1427781 Glow discharge lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Sept 1973 [12 Sept 1972] 42134/73 Heading H1D A glow discharge lamp has two co-planar electrodes 1 and 2 at least one of which is a flat apertured sheet. The second electrode may be a rod or, as shown, a similar flat apertured sheet. The electrodes 1 and 2 may be of nickel-chromium with a material to aperture surface area ratio of 1 : 2. The lamp may contain neon, argon and mercury and may have a luminescent wall coating 7 of millimite or calcium tungstate. The plane of the electrodes 1 and 2 is preferably at right-angles to the lamp base 8 to provide a larger luminous area in the arrowed viewing direction than that provided by lamps having closely spaced parallel electrodes as described in Specification 1,222,089.
