Abstract

1,020,170. Discharge lamps. A. WALZ. Nov. 19, 1963 [Nov. 27, 1962], No. 45695/63. Heading H1D. A gas discharge lamp has a discharge vessel composed of two wall parts 10, 11 with a middle part 15 in the space between them having helical projections in contact with the inner surfaces of parts 10, 11 to form a helical discharge path 16, 17, 18 ... 24, 25, 26 between electrodes 14, 27 and leaving a free space between edge 15b and the walls 10, 11. A steadying resistance such as incandescent lamp 28 may be provided. An ignition strip may be provided on part 15 or part 15 may be of an electric conducting material e.g. sheet iron, coated with a layer of glass or enamel insulation. Part 15 is coated with fluorescent material or alternatively the fluorescent material may be on walls 10, 11. In alternative embodiments, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), parts 10, 11 are spherically domed and in Fig. 3 the helical projections are webs on a spherically domed middle part.
