Abstract

966,077. Discharge lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 29, 1960 [April 30, 1959], No. 14802/59. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1D. A discharge lamp, which can be of the sodium vapour or fluorescent type, has an envelope having, at least over the greater part of its length, a transverse non-circular cross-sectional shape which is symmetrical about a transverse axis and which has a constriction coincident with its axis of symmetry which gradually increases in size away from the axis over a distance at least equal to one quarter of the maximum cross-sectional dimension of the envelope in a direction perpendicular to the transverse axis. Various cross-sectional shapes are described and the envelope can be partitioned to provide a retroverted or circuitous discharge path. The envelope can be made wholly of vitreous material or partly of metal or enamelled metal and partly of vitreous material and can be constructed as described in Specification 950,475. The envelope can be provided at intervals along its length with portions of circular crosssection for controlling the vapour pressure.
