Abstract

953,774. Thermionic valves. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 30, 1962 [May 1, 1961], No. 16403/62. Heading H1D. A grid assembly includes a grid support ring 8 and a grid terminal ring 6, which have unequal coefficients of expansion, are in contact only over diametrically opposed portions 32, and fuse together at elevated temperatures during tube processing, the arrangement being such that upon contraction, the grid support ring is distorted in such a way that parallel grid wires 10 stretched thereacross are tensioned. As shown, the triode envelope includes electrode terminals 2, 6, 14, 24 of titanium, and insulating portions 4, 12, 18 of forsterite. The grid terminal 6 includes ears 32, 32<SP>1</SP>, which extend arcuately for 60 degrees each, and during tube processing at 800‹ to 1100‹ C., fuse to the tungsten grid support ring 8. Since the radial contraction of ring 6 is greater than that of ring 8, ring 8 is compressed in a direction perpendicular to the wires 10, and the wires 10 are correspondingly tensioned. The spacing between grid wires 10 and cathode 16 is determined by a molybdenum or tantalum spacer 34. The grid includes 143 tungsten wires at a density of 736 per inch.
