Abstract

1,138,026. Discharge apparatus. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 1 March, 1966 [3 March, 1965], No. 8848/66. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H2] An insulating arrangement for an electron discharge tube, for example for providing a leading-in and termination for an anode lead in a high voltage mercury vapour tube, comprises a lead 1 extending coaxially through an insulative sleeve 2 providing the outside of the terminal and having in the annular space between the sleeve and the lead metal screens 3, 4, 5 for example, which are coaxial with the lead and which distribute the electric field between the lead and insulator and reduce particle penetration parallel to the lead. Each screen has a generally cylindrical portion which merges at one end with an annular portion which extends towards the sleeve, and where the screens extend in the same direction they are parallel and equispaced and changes in the direction of the screens follow gently curved paths devoid of angular or sharp corners. The further ends of the annular portions may be shaped as shown and extend to be fixed to the insulator wall by spring rings 6. These connections need not be of special form since they are, as shown, all made in a re-entrant part of a screen where there is zero field. The other ends of the cylindrical portions not joined to the annular portions may all extend at least as far as the termination of the insulative sleeve 2 at the tank 11, and may, as shown, be successively terminated away from this end of the sleeve 2 and be connected to a respective potential control grid 12.
