Abstract

816,901. Thermionic-cathode tubes. DUNKEL, M. M. Dec. 10, 1957 [Dec. 31, 1956], No. 38330/57. Class 39(1). An ionisation manometer is connected to an evacuated system by a ground joint 11 and comprises a circular screen electrode 32 outside and concentric with a circular wire cathode 31, a cylindrical grid 23-30 and a straight wire collector electrode 21. The grid comprises a plurality of coiled wires 25-30 extending between two rings 23, 24 connected to, and supported by leads 15, 16. The cathode is heated by a voltage source 40 and the grid is maintained at a positive potential by voltage source 41 so that some electrons are accelerated into the space between the grid and collector and produce positive ions which drift towards the collector which is maintained at a negative potential by voltage source 42. This ion current is measured by a meter 43 and indicates the gas pressure. The screen, grid and collector may be freed of occluded gas by heating them by means of transformers 34, 35, 33. The coiled wire 25-30 may be replaced by straight wires, and the screen electrode may comprise two circular wires on opposite sides of and equidistant to the cathode wire. All the electrodes are preferably made of heat resistant material such as tungsten, molybdenum or tantalum.
