Abstract
950,736. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 26, 1960, No. 14526/60. Heading H1D. In a thermionic valve comprising a frame control grid 15, Fig. 5, surrounding a cathode 14 and surrounded by a further electrode 16, the control grid side rods 1, Fig. 2, are spaced at one end by a ribbon-shaped strut 3 of thickness not greater than that of the cathode, and lying wholly between the planes of the grid wire 4. The electrodes are spaced at this end by an insulator 18, provided with apertures 10, 11, Fig. 4, for the cathode and the control grid side rods, these apertures being joined by slots 12 which afford passage for the control grid strut 3 during assembly of the valve. The strut 3 may be morticed into the side-rods 1, or may be butt-joined thereto. Wire rings 5 locate the control grid relative to insulator 18. As shown, screen grid 16 is also a frame grid with side rods spaced at one end by straps 26 recessed at 27 to reduce leakage currents, and at the other end by straps 8 bent away to provide clearance for control grid straps 2. Insulator 18 and a further mica bridge at the other end are supported by posts secured to a pair of mica discs which engage the envelope, Fig. 6 (not shown). Specific dimensions are given. In particular, the spacing between the control and screen grids is 0.007 inch and accordingly the screen grid voltage is only 50 v. with respect to the cathode. The invention may also be applied to triode valves.
