Abstract
997,589. Electron multipliers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 24, 1962, No. 36258/62. Heading H1D. To reduce oscillation of electrons about the wires of a photomultiplier anode A housed within the last box-shaped multiplying electrode Dn, and thus reduce the rise and fall time of signal pulses, a grid E is provided having a potential intermediate the potentials of the last two multiplying electrodes D n and D n-1 . This gives an equipotential of the D n voltage as indicated by the dotted line e electron oscillation being now confined to the region between the anode A and the equipotential e. The latter is preferably close to the anode and the Specification gives some numerical criteria. Preferably also the wires of the grid E and anode E are so arranged that, viewed from D n , the one lies in the shadow of the other.
