Abstract

976,619. Electron multipliers. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 24, 1961 [March 5, 1960], No. 7867/60. Heading H1D. A photo-emissive device has a photo-emissive cathode 3, a receiving electrode for electrons, a surface 17 around the path of electrons from the cathode to the receiving electrode capable of emitting electrons which give rise to dark current, and a foraminated electrode 22 substantially co-extensive with the surface and disposed in the path from the surface to the receiving electrode but not substantially in the path of electrons from the cathode to the receiving electrode so that the flow of dark current from the surface to the receiving electrode is reduced. The foraminated electrode, which may be a wire mesh, may be maintained at the potential of the surface 17, and it may be attached to the surface by stand-off wires. Alternatively, the electrode and surface may be made of differing metals so that a contact potential difference may be established between them, the foraminated electrode being negative with respect to the surface. The receiving electrode may be the first dynode 10 of an electron multiplier.
