Abstract
1,073,941. Ion sources. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 12, 1964 [June 12, 1963], No. 24529/64. Heading H1D. In a Penning type ion gun the longitudinal component of the magnetic field increases in intensity but at a decreasing rate from the reflective electrode 6, which forms one polepiece of the magnetic circuit, to the electron emitting and ion exit electrode 8 which forms the other polepiece. As shown, the ion exit aperture 10 is a slot with the electrode and polepiece 8 having two extensions 44, 44<SP>1</SP>. The anode is in two inclined parts 46, 46<SP>1</SP>, the inner surfaces of which conform with the direction of the magnetic field. The magnetic field also increases in each transverse plane from the central plane of the system to a maximum away from the central plane. The ion exit aperture may be circular or annular instead of in the form of a slot. Two rows of heaters 14, 16, Fig. 1 (not shown) are located in front of the electrode 8.
