Abstract

637,375. Electron beam valves. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1946, No. 37258. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] An electron beam tube contains in sequence a cathode 1, one or two electrodes 3, 4 at positive mean potential, a control electrode 2 of cathode mean potential, an output electrode system 6, 7 and a collecting electrode 5 ; the voltages on the electrodes and the electrode spacing are so chosen that the transit time of the electrons from cathode to control electrode is an integral multiple of half a cycle. Electrons repelled from the control electrode travel back to the cathode in the same time and cause an increase in space charge which reduces cathode emission, thus reducing the out-ofphase current. Electrode 4 suppresses secondary emission, and a magnetic focusing field may be provided. At a wavelength of 15 cm. the distance from cathode to control grid may be 8 mm. when the potentials of electrodes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 is about 700 volts.
