697,559. Thermionic valves. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 10, 1951 [July 13, 1950], No. 16332/51. Class 39(i) A beam from electrodes 1, 2, 3 is directed into a " cage " 9 wherein a space-charge depression of potential occurs. If the beam intensity is high the depression causes most of the electrons in the beam to be reflected to output electrode 11; if it is low, electrons can pass through the cage and reach second output electrode 10. Thus if the beam is modulated in intensity by grid 2, the space-charge effect enhances the modulation of the current collected by electrode 11 and the effective mutual conductance is thereby increased. The cage 9 is at cathode potential or slightly negative. Separate beam-forming plates may be provided.
