Abstract

1,008,797. Travelling-wave tubes. C.S.F.- COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FILS. Nov. 29, 1962 [Dec. 7, 1961], No. 45128/62. Heading H1D. In an 0-type travelling-wave tube in which the electron gun has a single anode 4 maintained at a potential between that of the cathode 2 and the delay line 12, the first element 16 of the delay line directly adjacent the anode has such a form that the interaction space is incompletely shielded from the gun space, the electrostatic field between the envelope 1 and the anode 4 penetrating slightly through the passages 21, 22 between the interdigital line, shown, and the envelope. This is to prevent the movement of secondary electrons liberated at the first element of the delay line in a direction opposite to that of the beam and so giving rise to parasitic oscillations. In the backward wave tube shown, two ribbon beams 10, 11 are injected one on each side of the line. The first element 16 of the line extends through the envelope to couple out the energy produced. The line may also be coated, sand-blasted, milled electrolytically or spark eroded to reduce secondary emission.
