Abstract
1,038,032. Cathode-ray tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 3, 1963 [May 31, 1962], No. 17621/63. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H4] In a cathode-ray tube in which a charge pattern is produced on a target and is scanned by an electron beam, the electron beam source is operable at a first potential with respect to the target to provide enhancement of the charge pattern through differential charging by secondary electron emission therefrom, and is sequentially operable at a second potential relative to the target to permit read-out of the charge pattern. The pick-up tube shown is generally similar to that described in Specification 1,038,031, but instead of providing a second electron source for enhancement of the charge pattern, the present tube comprises a single electron gun, including a control electrode 18 operated during first and second successive scans at 0.v. and - 3 v., while the target is at + 55 v. and + 45 v., respectively, to provide alternate charge pattern enhancement and read-out/erasure. The invention may be applied to vidicons, image orthicons or other storage tubes.
