Abstract

1,046,912. Television pick-up tubes. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Jan. 20, 1965 [Jan. 31, 1964], No. 2579/65. Heading H1D In a pick-up tube, fast electron image from photocathode 8 is focused on to a BIC target 1 to produce a charge pattern having an area smaller than that of the photocathode, and the charge pattern is scanned by a fast electron beam to cause emission of secondary electrons in a ratio greater than one, these electrons being collected by an electrode 18 adjacent the target to derive an output signal at 23. The target may comprise a metallic grid supporting an aluminium layer, 0À1 Á thick, and a zinc sulphide layer, 0.5 to 3 Á thick, and mounted on a metal ring 6 forming part of the tube envelope. To pick-up X-ray or γ-ray images, the photocathode 8 may be provided over a luminescent layer. The ratio of cathode area to target area may be about 36 : 1 but the voltages applied to focusing electrodes 12-16 may be adjusted to vary the area of the photocathode focused on to the target and hence the image demagnification. A corrector ring 24 may be provided between the collector electrode 18 and the target 1. Specific electrode operating potentials are given.
