Abstract

1321470 Image converters VARIAN ASSOCIATES 2 Oct 1970 [3 Oct 1969] 46987/70 Heading H1D An image tube having a curved photocathode 7 and a flat fluorescent screen 8 has a system of electron lenses to accelerate and focus a diminished electron image on to the fluorescent screen, the lens system comprising cylindrical electrodes 28, 23, 16 and anode 12 which have successively smaller apertures and in which the mouth portion 21 of anode 12 lies within the exit portion 19 of the preceding electrode 16. The electrode arrangement is stated to remove peripheral distortion of the image on screen 8. The anode 12 is supported adjacent and conductively connected to a thin conducting layer, e.g. aluminium, on the surface of the image converter screen. The focusing electrode 23 is supported from electrode 16 by circumferencially-disposed support insulator structures 26 such that its entrance aperture 24 is within the exit aperture 31 of the preceding focusing electrode 28 and its exit aperture 25 surrounds the entrance aperture 17 of the following focusing electrode 16. The electrode 28 may comprise a conductive layer of A1 on the envelope wall conductively connected to mating metallic frame portions 30. In an X-ray converter tube the photocathode 7 is formed as a layer on a scintillator 6 which itself is formed on a domed conductive electrode 5 which is transparent to X-rays and has a cylindrical extension 5<SP>1</SP> which extends within the frame portions 30 forming the entrance aperture of the first focusing electrode 28.
