Abstract
1,195,359. Image converter tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 28 March, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 16329/69. Heading H1D. An electron optical converter system comprises, in an envelope, an input radiation transmissive window 22 with a photocathode 26 on the inner surface thereof, a target member 20 positioned to receive photoelectrons from the photocathode, a main field-shaping electrode system, comprising, as shown, cathode shield electrode 36 and anode 48, for focusing the electron image on to the target 20, and, interposed between the target and the field-shaping electrode system a tubular corrector electrode 60 of greater diameter than its axial length and electrically isolated from the target, which reduces the distortion of the image formed on the target. The corrector electrode 60 has applied to it a voltage of between 0 and -8 kV with respect to the voltage of the adjacent anode electrode 48 to minimize the pin-cushion distortion resulting from the non-linear magnification of the electron image over the planar target. The target 20 may be a fluorescent screen or, as shown, may be a charge storage screen which is read by an electron beam from gun 90 to give a video output from lead 82 connected to the target. An example is described in which the relative potentials and dimensions of the various electrodes are given. The window 20 may be a fibre optic glass structure with the light pipes parallel to the tube axis.
