Abstract
1481814 Image intensifier tubes OPTISCHE INDUSTRIE DE OUDE DELFT NV 6 Nov 1974 [16 Nov 1973] 47994/74 Heading HID An image intensifier device includes one or more intensifier tubes comprising photosensitive electron emitter layer 13, electrically conductive rim 14, focussing means including flange 3 frit sealed to window 1 (e.g. fibre optic type) and connected to electrically conductive cylindrical member 5, and vaporized layer 18 between rim 14 and the flange 3-member 5 assembly of high R and low C so that upon sudden increase in the incident intensity which may cause anode burnout, the voltage difference between the above members causes defocussing and/or deflection of the electrons. Operation at low light levels, invisible to visible conversion, and sudden radiation increases due to shell explosions are disclosed. Layer 18 may extend around all or part of rim 14. Resistive layer 18 may be combined with external resistive means, and may have a non-linear characteristic so that for current increases up to about ten times, the volt drop does not exceed a few volts, whereas for currents >ten times, the resistance correspondingly increases. The assembly connected to the negative terminal of the voltage source, may be in two sections mutually insulated, layer 18 being included in only one, a sudden current increase resulting also in lateral beam deflection. Current, resistance, capacitance and voltage values are exemplified. In Fig. I (not shown), flange 10 is frit sealed to fibre optic window 12 and phosphor layer 15 is aluminized.
