Abstract

1,142,608. Image pick-up tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. 26 Sept., 1967 [21 Oct., 1966], No. 47238/66. Heading H1D. An electron gun for use in an image orthicon type of camera tube comprises a cathode 1, a control electrode 3, an apertured accelerating grid 4 having a small aperture 42 adapted to act as the beam defining aperture of the gun, an additional apertured electrode 6, and an apertured dynode 5, the additional electrode 6 being adapted for operation at a negative potential with respect to electrodes 4 and 5 so as, in operation, to remove electrons having a substantial radial component of energy and thereby reduce noise in the output signal of the tube. The gun is specially suitable for use in what is called "Isocon" scanning, i.e. when the beam returned from the target comprises electrons which have landed on the target and been specularly scattered back from its surface. In one example the electrodes 4 and 5 are at + 300 volts and the electrode 6 at + 70 volts relative to the cathode.
