Abstract
999,244. Electron multipliers. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 8, 1962 [Feb. 16, 1961], No. 5720/61. Heading H1D. In an electron multiplier, the dynodes are supported by spaced, insulating members 4, 5, Fig. 1, having facing surfaces each provided with one groove 8 for each dynode. As shown, in a photo-electron multiplier, the ends of fused glass members 4, 5 project into a cathode screen 9 and are secured in position by wires 14, 15 lying in grooves 6, 7, and welded to plates 10, 11 of screen 9. At their lower ends, members 4, 5 are connected by a transverse rod 16. Ten dynodes 3, Fig. 2, are then slid between members 4, 5, adjacent dynodes being inserted from opposite ends. Each dynode has lateral projections 19 at one end and lugs at its firstinserted end which are turned down to secure the dynode in position. A grid anode and a plate dynode are supported in the last two grooves of each member 4, 5. The outer surfaces of members 4, 5 may be formed with ribs to engage the envelope, and with grooves to house the electrode leads. The dynodes 3 may have metal meshes extending thereover. The photomultiplier may be ¢-inch in diameter and 2 inches or less in length.
