Abstract

976,174. Cathode-ray tubes. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 13, 1963 [April 13, 1962], No. 9997/63. Heading H1D. In a cathode-ray tube of the type employing electrostatic focusing and arranged for cathode modulation, the electron gun comprises an indirectly heated cathode within a control grid 37 maintained at earth potential, a second grid 50 having a shield member 57, both at low potential, a third grid 60 connected to a fifth grid 80 at high potential and a fourth grid 75 maintained at an intermediate potential. The grids are shaped as shown, and the dimensions of the apertures in the grids and of their spacings are chosen to give a penetration factor of 5 for the second grid and have relationships such that the spacings 51, 52 do not exceed 0.17 aperture d 1 ,the ratio of aperture d 2 to d 1 is between 0.9 and 0.7. The function of the shield member 57 is to separate the triode section 53, 40 and a conical section 54 of grid 50 from the effects of the potential of grid 60 and to achieve this aperture d 3 is equal in size to aperture d 1 ,spacing S 4 is not greater than 0.6 d 3 and spacing S 5 is equal to or greater than 3 d 3 .An example, giving grid dimensions and potentials is set out in the Specification.
