Abstract

1,031,374. Cathode-ray tubes. RANK ORGANISATION Ltd. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 7238/62. Heading H1D. In a tube of the kind described in Specification 975,251, one or more grids are provided between the electron source 12, and switching matrix 17 so that electrons reach the matrix 17 in the form of a number of parallel elemental beams, and switching is facilitated. As shown, the tube comprises a control grid 14, an accelerating grid 24 and further grids 25-29, the apertures in the grids being aligned with those in matrix 17. Grid 25 may be at a low positive potential so that the switching potentials required at matrix 17 for selectively passing elemental beams are low. Alternatively, grid 25 may be more positive than grid 24 and may be close to matrix 17 for preventing interference between adjacent elemental beams. Grid 26 extracts electrons from matrix 17 and accelerates them in conjunction with further accelerating and collimating grids 27-29 which may be operated as Einzel lenses. The elemental beams passing matrix 17 are deflected on to a phosphor screen, or may form a charge pattern on a dielectric screen, or may impinge on an array of target electrodes.
