Abstract

1289419 Cathode-ray tubes SONY CORP 30 June 1970 [30 June 1969 (2)] 31599/70 Heading H1D In a cathode-ray tube of the type wherein a plurality of beams generated by a cathode/grid assembly intersect at the centre of a common focusing lens, an auxiliary grid is provided in the path of at least one of the beams between first and second grids in order to equalize the cut-off voltages of the beams. In Fig. 3 auxiliary grids G2<SP>1</SP> are provided in the paths of the outer beams between grids G1 and G2, and the second grid G2 is provided with a protuberance G2<SP>1</SP>G which has a similar effect on the centre beam. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the end of grid G2 is planar and a grid G2<SP>1</SP> is provided for the centre beam. In Fig. 3 the cathodes are parallel, but in modifications, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the cathodes converge and are surrounded by individual grids G1; the grid G2 may be provided with a protuberance (Fig. 5) or the centre cathode/grid may be moved forward so that the grid (G1G) surface is aligned with the auxiliary grids G2<SP>1</SP> of the outer beams. The presence of the auxiliary grids G2<SP>1</SP> may cause the beams to converge or diverge, according to their position and potential; this effect may be avoided by arranging that the cathode-grid spacing of the centre beam is greater or less than that of the outer beams or that the aperture in the grid G1G of the centre beam is larger or smaller than those of the outer beams so that the potential of the auxiliary grids G2<SP>1</SP> may be such as not to cause excessive convergence or divergence whilst equalizing the cut-off voltages of the three beams. The tube may be a colour television tube using co-planar beams and an apertured grill acting as a shadow mask.
