Abstract
793,665. Travelling-wave tubes. TELEFUNKEN GES. March 14, 1956 [March 19, 1955], No. 8026/56. Class 39(1). In a travelling-wave tube in which the current component of the noise fluctuation is reduced by the known " space-charge-deamplification " principle, the velocity component of the fluctuation is simultaneously reduced by providing in the space-charge region velocity-selection means which ensure that only electrons of a limited range of velocity pass on to the wave interaction region. As shown the helix 1, Fig. 1, is spaced from the face 9 of the gun assembly a distance giving optimum deamplification of the current wave as described in " R.C.A. Review " June 1954, pages 252-267. Within the gun assembly is a 90‹ velocity selector consisting of curved deflecting plates 7, 71 which acts on the electrons after they have been accelerated to about 10 volts by screen 6. Other forms of selector include a 127‹ deflector, Fig. 2 (not shown), a magnetic multiple screen arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown) and a focussing type consisting of an annular aperture 13, Fig. 3, through which the beam is focussed by magnetic field M. Positive-ion bombardment of the cathode is reduced.
