Abstract

852,339. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Jan. 22, 1958 [Jan. 23, 1957], No. 2488/57. Class 39(1). A discharge lamp, having a filling of rare gas with or without metal vapour at above atmospheric pressure, has a single metal starting electrode 3, to which a potential is applied, sealed through the wall of the envelope into the vicinity of one of the main electrodes 1 and prolonged into proximity with the other main electrode 2. A bar magnet 5 can be used to apply a magnetic field at right angles to the arc to cause rapid movement and deflection of the arc from the cathode 1 towards the anode 2. The filling can be xenon at a pressure, when cold, exceeding atmospheric. The lamp can be operated on D.C. or A.C. with its axis vertical or between the horizontal and about 45 degrees to the horizontal.
