Abstract
1,008,362. Discharge tubes. LITTON SYSTEMS Inc. April 12, 1962 [April 14, 1961], No. 14200/62. Heading H1D. A low-pressure mercury vapour discharge tube has two discharge spaces separated by a grid-type electrode 50, the lower space including a mercury pool cathode 26, an igniter electrode 52, a vacuum connection 15, and an anode 54 to form a complete discharge device, and the upper space includes a main anode 56 and a target electrode 58 for supporting an object within the discharge. A gas, e.g. a rare gas, may be admitted to the tube through pipe 35. The tube may be water-cooled, 22, and the pressure of the mercury vapour in the upper space may be reduced by a liquid nitrogen finger 39. The tube may be dismantled, to change the sputtered object on the electrode 58, without disturbing the electrodes, by removing the glass member 12. A circular strip of molybdenum 27 may be used as a cathode spot anchor.
