Abstract

1,008,363. Discharge apparatus. LITTON SYSTEMS Inc. Aug. 24, 1962 [Aug. 28, 1961], No. 32701/62. Heading H1D. [Also in Division C7] Electric discharge apparatus is provided with means for removing a deposit from the inner surface of the glass envelope, or for preventing its formation thereon, by positioning an electrode outside the envelope and adjacent the site of the deposit and applying alternating potential between said electrode and another electrode within the envelope to induce ionic bombardment of said surface, thereby to remove said deposit and/or prevent its formation. As applied to a low-pressure mercury plasma tube, Fig. 2, or to a fluorescent lamp, Fig. 6, deposits which may form or tend to form on the inside surface of non-conductor envelope (11, Fig. 2, 70, Fig. 6) may be dissipated by placing electrode 50, 74 adjacent the outer surface of the envelope opposite the region of said deposit formation, and impressing an alternating potential of not less than 25,000 cycles per second between said electrode and the main anode 36; 71 (see Division C7). Specifications 994,911 and 1,008,362 are referred to.
