Abstract

1,152,336. Electron beam apparatus. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 24 Aug., 1966 [30 Aug., 1965], No. 38021/66. Heading H1D. One method of manufacturing an electrostatic writing tube 10 includes the step of selectively coating interior surfaces of the tube envelope with an anhydrous electrically conductive material to form an anode coating 22, and the method, which does not involve a preliminary air brake in the presence of the matrix to drive off occluded water vapour, produces a tube that has virtually no internal matrix arcing. The coating 22, which may be of stannous chloride to give a transparent coating or of aluminium, extends from adjacent the matrix element 16 in the faceplate 14 into the tube neck 12 where it is electrically connected by snubbers 24 to the anode element. The matrix 16 may comprise a number of laterally arranged insulatingly spaced conductive members extending from the internal to the external surface of the matrix, the members being spaced by at least six times their own diameter. Also the matrix may be polished on its inner face with a 400 grit polish. In an alternative method the interior surface of the tube envelope is coated with a hydrated material and the tube is then air-baked to drive off the water vapour prior to attaching the matrix and stored in an anhydrous atmosphere until the matrix element is sealed thereto. In prior art described, the anode coating is of "Aquadag" (R.T.M.) which is airbaked when the matrix has been sealed to the envelope, and matrix arcing is reduced by a process involving sandblasting and acid etching the matrix prior to providing the anode coating.
