Abstract

<PICT:1039691/C6-C7/1> A vacuum coating apparatus includes an ion source 22 for cleaning the substrate 18 of e.g.glass by ion bombardment during, or immediately preceding, the deposition of the coating by evaporating e.g.aluminium from a heater 24. The ion source comprising anode rod 34 and cathode cap 26 is supplied with argon through the valve 36 and a glow discharge is established between the electrodes. The coating is maintained at 10-4 mm. Hg by the pump 32.
