Process for applying metal coatings to elongated work items, as well as equipment for carrying out the process. The present invention relates to. a method for applying metal coatings to elongated work items, such as wires and bands, and a device for carrying out the method.
The inventive method consists in that the work item. is carried out in a steady work process through a treatment room in which the metal used to occupy the work item evaporates. while at the same time the treatment room. delimiting surfaces are heated above the evaporation temperature of the metal.
The device for carrying out the method is characterized in that the treatment space is enclosed in the cavity of a container which is closed off from the outside. I-) end vessel with openings for the passage of work goods, means for moving work goods,
Evaporation devices for the metal to be applied and a heat source for heating at least the inner surface of the vessel to above the evaporation point of the metal to be applied are arranged.
In the drawing, an exemplary embodiment from the device is illustrated schematically. In connection with the description of this example, an exemplary embodiment of the method is also described.
A container 1 which is closed off to the outside and which can be evacuated is shown with dot-dash lines. In the cavity of the container 1 there is a closed Ge vessel, which consists of two essentially cylindri's parts 2 and 3, which abut one another by means of the flanges 4 and 5 and are connected to one another by connecting means, not shown.
Recesses 6 and 7 are worked into the vessel at two diametrically opposed locations in such a way that they adjoin the interface between the flanges 4 and 5. Via these recesses 6 and 7, work to be provided with a metallic coating is well 8 of elongated shape and small cross-section, for example wire or tape, into the interior of the vessel 2, 3 and out again. The working well 8 runs for this purpose from a coil 9 also arranged in the nern of the container 1 and is wound onto a reel 10 after occupancy, which is also located in the cavity of the container 1 and which is driven with the help of a device, not shown.
In the vessel 2, 3, a certain amount of that metal 11 that is to be applied as a coating to the work item 8 is collected. The application is done by evaporation of the material 11 and by condensation of the metal vapor formed on the work item B. To make this possible, the vapor deposition vessel 2, 3, for example, is made of graphite. The melting and evaporation of the metal 11 is done by heating the vapor deposition vessel 2, 3; In the case of the exemplary embodiments, this is done by means of electrical current passage through the vessel.
For this purpose, connection terminals 12 and 13 are attached to the ends of the vessel parts 2 and 3, to which electrical lines 14 and 1a lead. The steaming vessel could, however, also be heated indirectly, be it by means of resistance bodies or by means of high-frequency alternating current, it being possible for the two vessel parts 2 and 3 to be separately heatable.
In these cases, the vessel 2, 3 can also consist of non-conductive materials, for example made of quartz glass or an oxide whose melting point is higher than the evaporation point of the metal to be applied.
The mode of operation of the device described so far is as follows: The work item to be provided with a metal coating, e.g. B. a wire 8 is pulled by driving the take-up reel 10 through the vapor deposition vessel 2, 3, in which the metal 11 to be applied is at least partially in the form of steam.
The steam precipitates on the wire 8, which is cold compared to the vessel 2, 3 3 and thereby forms the desired coherent coating. The wire 8 is pulled through the vapor deposition vessel at a certain speed, so that the wire is continuously occupied.
In order to achieve a perfect and even coating, it is essential that the entire inner surface of the vaporization vessel 2, 3 is heated to above the vaporization point of the metal to be applied so that no precipitate forms on the vessel walls that could affect the wire to be assigned. could drain.
Compared to the entire volume of the evacuated container 1, the steaming space inside the vessel 2, 3 is small. From this it follows. First of all, there is a saving in the material to be evaporated and further energy, which is necessary for the evaporation of the metal and for heating the vessel walls.
The passage recesses 6 and 7 for the work well 8 to be covered are adapted to the cross section of the same so that the metal vapor does not. escapes from the interior of the steaming vessel?, 3 into the vacuum space 1; that the clearance between the work piece and the surfaces delimiting the passage recesses is of the order of magnitude at most equal to the thickness of the coating.
Between the winding reel 9 and the steaming vessel '', 3 means for cleaning the work items to be laid 8 can be arranged immediately before the occupancy sen in the cavity of the container. In the illustrated embodiment, this cleaning takes place thermiseli in that the work item 8 passes through an electrical coil 16 which is fed with high-frequency alternating current, and temporarily heats the work item passing through.
With this measure, the work material is preheated at the same time. The cleaning could also be done purely mechanically or by bombing the to be occupied. Work material with ions or electrons of high kinetic energy or with both.
A good adhesive strength of the metal coating produced on the work item 8 is achieved by thermal sewing treatment of the work item, in which the coating diffuses partially into the work item. For this purpose, there is an electrical coil 17 between the steaming vessel 2, 3 and the take-up reel 10, through which the steamed work item runs.
In order to achieve a certain desired thickness of the applied metallic liner, the work item 8 can also be passed through the steaming vessel in a repeated operation until the required Schielit thickness is reached. is.
In certain cases it is indicated that the process should not be carried out in a vacuum, but in a protective gas atmosphere; In this case, the protective gas is introduced into the previously vented container 1. In the manner described, wires and strips, especially with a very small cross-section, can be provided with a metal coating, be it to increase electrical conductivity, to increase corrosion resistance or for any other purpose.
The process is particularly suitable for the evaporation of precious metals, since the previously known processes led to very large losses in these, apart from the hiii ", eligibility of the vaporization. Therefore, after the process, for example (gold coatings on the finest - Tolybdenum wires are successfully produced so that at least half of the evaporated gold has to be condensed; wires of this type are used to produce ('tremors in electron tubes.
