Abstract

1,175,275. Cold cathode tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 July, 1967 [9 July, 1966], No. 31120/67. Heading H1D. A glow discharge tube includes an envelope 2 containing a gas filling comprising a first rare gas and a small quantity, relative to the total, of a heavier second rare gas which does not produce a Penning effect with the first gas and also is incapable of forming molecular ions with said first gas, said envelope also containing a finely divided metal in which tritium is absorbed. The filling may be argon plus 0 1 to 1% krypton. The added rare gas enables the strength of the radio-active material necessary to neutralize the statistical ignition delay to be reduced. The trigger tube shown is similar to the tube described in Specification 1,015,976 which has a filling of argon and contained 1Á C of tritium. The present tube has a filling of argon plus 0.5% krypton at a pressure of 100 mm. Hg and contains a dot 17 of Ti powder in which 0À1 Á C of tritium is absorbed.
