Abstract
967,685. Cold cathode tubes. HIVAC Ltd. March 18, 1963 [March 28, 1962], No. 11926/62. Heading H1D. A method of introducing mercury into a low pressure gas discharge tube comprises introducing within the tube envelope prior to pumping and sealing a quantity of a staple oxide of mercury together with a suitable agent such as red or amorphous phosphates for reducing the oxide to free the mercury on heating subsequent to sealing the tube. One preferred composition is 4.3 grm. Hg 0 to 0.3 grm. phosphorus giving 20% excess phosphorus which is dispersed and assists in clearing any other free oxygen in the tube. The mixture is placed within a thin-walled metal capsule 22 welded to a C-shaped member 21 of solid wire forming a closed turn which is placed within an R.F. field, thus heating the composition and disrupting the capsule wall. A mica disc 17 has openings to permit the mercury vapour to pass into the body of a character display arrangement 14-16.
