Abstract
1,265,197. Discharge tubes; cathode processing. S.A.E.S. GETTERS S.p.A. 9 Sept., 1969 [13 Sept., 1968], No. 44495/69. Heading H1D. A member 21 is positioned internally adjacent a longitudinal opening 20 in the elongated metal container of a device for releasing metal vapour resulting from heating a particulate substance 14 to render the opening permeable to the metal vapour but impermeable to the particulate substance. As shown, the member 21 is a wire having a diameter greater than the width d of the opening 20. The wire 21 and the container, which is provided with terminals 12, are made of a Ni/Cr alloy which can be heated to a temperature of about 1000‹ K. by the passage of current. The device may be used for releasing vapours of Hg, Cs, K, Na or Ba in vessels such as electron tubes. The release of Cs in an image intensifier tube is described. The substance 14 may be a mixture of a compound of the desired metal and a reducing agent. Reducible metal compounds include caesium dichromate or more preferably caesium chromate, potassium chromate and sodium chromate. The reducing agent may be silicon or aluminium. Mercuric oxide may be used to produce mercury vapour. A Ba/Al alloy may be used to produce barium vapour. The elongated container may have any desired cross-sectional shape.
