Abstract

1,034,024. Metal-vapour discharge tubes. CSF.-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIC SANS FIL. April 21, 1965 [April 29, 1964], No. 16693/65. Heading H1D. Mercury vapour is liberated within an evacuated enclosure by heating a substance composed at least in part of mercury pyrophosphate (Hg 2 P 2 O 7 ). The enclosure may be the envelope of any mercury vapour discharge tube, e.g. a thyratron or lamp. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the pyrophosphate is contained in a vessel 4 composed of two dishes welded together at spaced points and attached to one of the rods 3 supporting the electrode system 2 of a discharge tube. Degassing at temperatures below about 600‹ C. releases substantially no mercury vapour. Heating to temperatures between 600‹ and 800‹ C., e.g. by high frequency currents, releases the mercury vapour. If a temperature of 750‹ C. is to be exceeded a reducing substance, e.g. powdered aluminium, aluminium and magnesium alloy, titanium, zirconium or columbium is mixed with the pyrophosphate to prevent the release of oxygen.
